CANTERBURY CROPS.
SPLENDID PROSPECTS. CHRISTCHURCH, Janary 11. Country reports indicate superb harvest prospects, given fine weather from now till the completion of the ingathering. The rapid development of the pastoral industry that followed the success of the frozen meat trade threw an immense acreage of land into pasture that was previously under cereal crop. Wheat had been the staple farm product, but was not profitable to anything like the degree that frozen meat was. Now that wheat is bringing high pi ices, and much pasture is requiring renewal, the occasion seems to have been taken this year to grow a good deal more wheat, and the area is very much larger. The long spell of grass has done the land a world of good, and an abundant crop is the natural consequence. The yield this year should be equal, if not better, than the best year experienced.
