WAI ME A.

I January 8. — Christmas and New Year have once more come and gone, and on the whole the residents of Waunea toolc the holidays very quietly. The weather was very fine up till the evening of Christmas Day, when there was a break, and a very welcome shower came to lay the dust and to satisfy trie longings of thirsty crops. On Boxing Day it was showery, and continued so throughout the following week »nd up till the present. Though not good weather for holiday-makers it is excellent for the turnip crops. The oat crop on th© whole is fairly good, though late crops on turnip land are not as successful as usual. Most of the farmers have got through with their shearing, but the larger sheep-owners have still a lot on hand. Those who got through early were very fortunate, for the weather was much more suitable then than now. Wendon Picnic—^On Christmas Day the residents of Wendon held their annual picnic. The day was fine, and there was a large attendance. A committee had been formed to look after the sports and see to the refreshments. The many events were put through with creditable quickness, there being no lack in entries. A number of young people who wera not taking part in the sports filled in the time with the UoUal round games. On New Year's Day the Riversdale picnic iraa held, and despite the fact that heavy showers- fell during the afternoon, there was a very good at- , tendance. Though the weather seemed to damp the spirits of the visitors somewhat yet it "did not seem to damp the ardour of the competitors in the different evente, as everything went off with a 6wing.
