LAKE COUNTY.

January 9. — During irire past week very unpleasant weather has been experienced. Several showers have fallen, with snow on the mountain tope. The Remarkables h-ave been, half mantled with snow, and ■presented am unusual spectacle at this time of tbe year. Although not appreciated by local residents, Australian -visitors were delighted with the enhanced grandeur of oar mountain scenery. Week-end Exclusion. — The first of the week-end trips was to-diay. About 150 weekenders arrived in Queenstown by steamer this evening. Accident. — A very distressing accident occurred at Crown Terrace, Arrow, yesterday, whereby a young man named William Jenkins, son of Mr John Jenkins, was esverely injured. He was oiling the cogs v_of the horse-pcwier of a chaffcutter whilst it waß in motion, when the sleeve of his coat got caught and his arm was drawn in. When the horses were stopped it was found that the flesh was torn from hi* j arm, chest, and 1 back. Notwithstanding his terrible injuries, the young man. kept in ' .good spirits. He was remoyed to the' Arrow ] Hospital, and, this morning, his arm was j amputated at the shoulder by Dr Thomson, \ assisted by Dr Douglas. [Later information to hand j reports the death of Mr William Jenkins. — Ed. O.W.] Personal. — Dr T. Anderson, M.D., F.R.G.S., arrived in Queenstown during tiie> week. He has paid' visits to all parts j of the district during his stay. Dr Anderson ia a vice-president of the British Association, and preaidsnit of the Yorkshire Philosophical Society, and has been Tindall Lecturer on "Volcanoes at tho Royal Institution. His mission to tbe Dominion is to study the hot springs and volcanoes of New Zealand. Although Dr Anderson cannot study hot springer or volcanoes in tha Wakatipu district, he has, nevertheless, bean busy with- his camera, taking views of the various ''beauty spots of the district. He expresses himself as being delighted with the scenic beauties of the Wakartipu. Que>en6towin Regatta. — The Queenstown Regatta Club has issued' their preliminary programme of rowing events, which will take place on Easter Saturday, April 18. The programme consists of 10 events, including a Lake Wakaitipu Senior Fouroared Championship, of £16. The sum of £69 is to be given away in prizes for firstclass rowing events, ao that a large number of crews should be induced to make tbe trip to Queenstown during Easter time. W.M.R.— The final match for the Hailem«tein trophy (a barometer) was fired for by menrbers of the Wakatinu Mounted Rifles on New Year's Dav, ana resulted in a win for Corporal J. S. Jenkins, whose best three scores were: 88, 84, and 75. Trooper j Hansen was a good secor.d with 245, and ; Sergeant E. Hoaly third with 242. J
