PROBABLE CANDIDATE^. AUCKLAND, Junuaiy 7. Messrs A. Burns (Mayor of Tlun cs) jnd E. Deeble (who stood at the last general election) are said to be already in the field for the Thanws seat. Otheie mentioned as probable candidates are Messrs R. T. Douglas (a former Mayor of Thames), H. H. Adams (a well-known mining man), F. H. Haselden (one of the Ohinemuri candidates at the last election). and William Ji'Cullough (of the Thames Star). INVERCARGILL. January 8. In view of the statements that* have been made in regard to the possibility of Mr M'Nab going back to the Cabinet by way of the vacant Thames seat, that gentleman was interviewed here on arrival of the late express to-nig-ht. and was asked point blank how much was in the rumour. Mr M'Nab said : "I have never been approached to contest the Thames seai. Of course, it is so far from my home that I wouldi not think of putting myself forward unless it was the desire of leading people of the Thames that I should do so. There may be local men who desire to succeed Mr M'Gowan, but I am not aware of the conditions." Mr M'Nab further stated that the rumour that he proposed to sell out of KnapdaHe and purchase lartl in the North Island was untrue. The reason for his present visit to Itnapdale yraa that he desired to make arrangements foT the carrying on of the estate during his absence in Wellington, where he would have to spend four months in connection v.'ith the publication of his book.
