ALTERATION IN RAILWAY RATES ON COAL AND TIMBER.

The Gazette of 23rd ult. gives particulars of som« alterations in the rates of freight upon the railways on coal and timber. The present claseified rates for Class "X"" (timber) for distances of 155 niil<*s and over aro caji-celled and the alterations for distances beyond that mileage are on a sliding scale. For 175 mile* the reduction is I<3, for 200 miles Id, 225 miles 2d, 250 miles s<l, 300 miles Is Id, 350 miles Is &d, 400 miles 2s 4d. Oregon timber is to bo charged rates and a-half. The reduction of Is per 100 feet on timber consigned by the sawmillers in Southland to Kensington and Dunedin, and 9d to stations between Peliehet Bay and Orari is cancelled and the folio-wing substituted : Timber from sawmills in Southland consigned to Kensington and Duaadin will be charged Is per 100 superficial feet le=3 than the classified rate?. Timber con-sig-ned from Southland to stations North of Bunedin will be subject to reductions on the ordinary rate-* as follows: — Not exceeding 160 miles 9d per 300 feet, up to 220 miles Bd, 230 miles 7d, 235 mile* 6d, 240 miles sd. 250 miles 4d, 255 miles 3d, 260 miles 2xl, and 270 miles Id.
