The tournament had reached its final stages, an<l it was to ha^e been brought to a conclusion, but at 2 o'clock the rain descended in torrents and absolutely put a stop to any further play. The green in half an hour had an inch or moiC of \\ater ljing all over it. The dav'b play resulted: — RINK TOURNAMENT. Semi-final. Taieri (A. Cameron, A. W. Christie, D. L. Christie, A. C. Play iii the Dunedin Centre tournament v\a.s continued at the Caledonian Green on Thursday morning, a fairly large number j of onlookers being prc^e-nt. The green ha<l | dried up in a surprising manner after the- ' lua\y downpour of the previous afternoon, ' and was -laying really well. A few bhowers fell dm ing th~ progress of the games, and made the strength of the green very puzzling. Ln. the rink tournament Smeaton and M'Laren continued their semi-final with (he secret standing at 13 — 5 in favour of .Smeaton, 11 heads sUll remaining to be piayed. Smeaton went on adding to his score till at the fifteenth end hh» total was 20. After this M'Laren got Hie mar, ami by splendid piay got a 6 at the eighteenth head, and a 1 and a 2 put him 1 ahead, j In the final head Smeaton wan King 1, '■ and \v,th his iaei bowl drew ano f her shot, ■ and finifchsd 1 up. Smeaton then met j M'lntjre in the final. He was only 3 to j his opponent's 13 at the eight end, and • the closest he ever get to him was at the fouiteenth and -i\ieentn c-nds, when , the --cores were 9—149 — 14- and 12 — 18. In the t-jxteeiith end Sniratoii had an opportunity i oi making 4- or 5, but hLs la~t bowl was ] juct a shade \\ kle. and lie only got three . Miot^. Jn the se\enteeii!ii Smeaton'b judgment was open to question. Ther? \\a-s a draw on the back han<l, but he elected to i tlri\e, and ran lii 3 own bowl out, and left M'Tnt\ro lying 3. The eighteenth head Hrnt to M'lntyre. In the nineteenth end M'lntyre trailed the "kitty," and made ; four shots of it. .Sm^aton's drive with his ] fii-ac bowl wai a failure, but his Jast attempt i de>er\e<! a. better fate. His bowl, which , «ao well played, jiiot wicked off a short , boivl and ran off. A-s lh 3 re were only two head-, to go. and ho wlu then 14- "down , Smeaton ictl,-t!. In tho plaj-off for third l^lace \'} M - Laic:i and Ir\ine, the former ,

> went away with a strong lead, and ha<J ~. scored 9 to his opponent's nil at the sixth s end. The St. Kilda team never recovered ' their lost ground, although, in the su'bee- . quent play, they got in a couple of 4's. Dumedin's later score included three 3's. The double between M'lntyre and M'Laren to decide who should be. in the semi-final was won by the former by one • shot. In the semi-final of the Doubles M'lntyre met his first defeat i'iu ■ the tournament. In tba Rinks he and his team of Taieri players never iosfc a game, and he and A. W. Christie fought their way right up to the semi-final of the Doubles without meeting with a reverse—a record to be proud of. It was a bit of a surprise to find the two Taieri men put oui °y Fountain and Barneti, but these two won by sheer good play. There was no luck about it. "When Barnett had scored 3 M'lntyre got a 6, which, with the 1 obtained at the first end, made him 7, and the Roslyn men had a hard struggle to wipe out the advantage. Nothing more than 2 at a head was obtained, and ifc was not until the seventeenth end that matters were made equal, the score then being12 all. After this Taieri [cmly scored one single, while Roslyn got three singles. At 7.3o"M'lnfcyre commenced to play Carter for third place. Owing, to the lateness of the Hour it was decided to make the game one of 14 heads, a**d -after an interesting game Garter won by 1 point. M'lntyre required 5 to' "tie at the last end, and succeeded in getting 4. The final between, Barnett and Scoular was played at 5 p.m. yesterday, Barnett winning by 1 point. Barnett ran up a score of 14, while his opponents were making 5. but after that Scoular's inninge came, and he increased his total to 12 by the time tho fourteenth head had been played. At the twentieth end the scores were even (18 all), and Barnetfc got one J shot next end, and won the Doubles. Bar1 nett made two big- hauls during the progress of the game, getting four shots at the fifth and five at the eighth .ends. Scoular, on the other hand, never lay more than three.
