Grant. j January 1 was a day to make the heart* i of yachtsmen glad, for a fresh hresze from, I the north-east that was • fairly persistent throughout gave the amateur navigators ample opportunities for displaying their skill and tested the capabilities of their craft. These weedier inducements, coupled with the increased facilities for getting to Broad Bay by steamers, induced a very large attendance on the 1st — the largest that has been known since the annual regattas have been held in that beautiful corner of Dunedin's lovely harbour. The following events were comprised in the day's programme. The corrected, and not actuaf, times being given in the case of boats receiving handicap allowance. OPEN BOAT RACE, 20ft and over. Three times round.— N. M'Cormick's Wilnamina (scratch), time, 72min Bsec, 1; R. Bauehop's Bronzewing (2min), time, 73min 31eee, 2; R. Collin's May (Bmin), time. 83min lsee. P. Percy's Rimu, the scratch boat, also started and made a gocd race with Wilhainina, but was disqualified for fouhne a flag buoy. MOTOR BOAT RACE. FIRST-CLASS YACHT RACE. Four times round. This was an exceedingly well-contested ■event. In a first-class start G. Curries Ann is got away the smartest, closely followed by Blackie, Webber, and George's Waimana, and Wall, Morgan, and Stepheason's Matua. Rounding Grassy. Point Buoy Annis was leading, with the other yachts close in har wake. On the first time round Thelma passed the flagship £mm ahead of the others, and on the second time round was still leading, with S. Bolt and Co.'s Tucana second. These two mainrained their positions on the third round, but on the final round Carina and Petrel, by clever handling, came to the front. The latter lost her chance for first place by carrying away her peak halyards. There were eight starters. CRUISER'S YACHT RACE. Three times round.— Gruitt and Co.'s Rambler, time, 51min 28sec, I; G.
