SHARKS AT SUMNER. (Fmou Our Own Coeresponbent.)
CHRISTCHURCH, January 4. It is stated that sharks are very numerous off Sumner and New Brighton this summer. While fishing for cod off the end of the pier yesterday a young man was considerably astonished* ,to -see the gaping jaws of a^ fair-sized shark coin« to view. After an unmistakable bite the shark was caught by the upper lip, and was suspended with its head just above water. The line would have been too weak ta support the shark's entire weight, andf while means were being devised to land. i<j an amateur sportsman with a pea rifle made a target of -the jaws, without inflicting any very eerious injury on tb«! shark. Eventually a rope was lowere^ and made fast round the fins by a. ven^" turesome - gwunmer, who jjwam out front the beach, and the shark was landed on! the pier amid much jubilation. It meai suredi 7ft from the nose to the tip of tlie tail.
— In consequence of torpedo attaok. naval stations must he closed at night by booma &nd. other defences.
