THE DUNEDIN CA.LEDONIAN SOCIETY'S SPORTS. t

A MOST SUCCESSFUL GATHERING, j The weather on January 1 was not just what might have been desired for the first day of the Otag o Caledonian Society's sports, but tne Tain, which was threatening to fall ' the whole of the afternoon, kept off until r the last event had been finished. A 00-d morth-east wind blew, which did not make matters too comfortable for tb>3 public, and ■which interfered to some extent with the-; competitors, especially those engaged, in the cycling events. The attendance appeared to be about as Trig as last year, which means that it was large; but from J the takings it seems to have bsen even ; larger despite a gj»omy-looking afternoon. The s takings reached £226 16s. as against £202 Is for last year. AH the officials were kept busy attending to their duties during the afternoon, and a special word of praise is duo to \\vi press steward (Mr W. E. CHeid) for the unremitting" attention which he gave the press representatives. No one could possibly have acted in the capacity better than Mr Reid did. Mr C. E. Keast was also of great assistance in coMMotion. with the meeting, and cheerfully gave all the information he oonld. Both the Dxtnedin Pope Band and the Kaikorai Brass Band were in attendance, and their playing went fax to enliven the proceedings. All : ■the events wexe got off very promptly, the last race being concluded by 5 o'clock. The wrestling was in .active progrees. throughout th» afternoon, and was watched •with been interest; and, though the competitors were not perhaps quite as numerous as usual, those engaged in tfee contests gave a good exhibition, notably in Border wrestling. P. A. M'Coll, of Wellington, walked away in great style from W. Craik in the Mile Champion Walk, but Craik put on wonderful pace, and caught «uid passed his opponent when within a _ . very short distance of the tape. Unforrunately come trouble arose over the finish. • It is alleged that Craik, intentionally or otherwise, put out his arm. and prevented M'Coll from repasskbg him, and M'Coll caught him by the shoulder a few yardsfrom home. After deliberation by thoso j controliipg the race, Craik was disqualified ' and .first pjace. given to M'Coll. R. D. Chalmers, of Dunedin. distinguished himself in leng-distaaice running. Be won the Italf-mile Championship m good time, and { .from a back mark carried off the Quartermile in 546ec. Running from scratch in the Half-mil© Handicap, and giving away 40yds, be was only beaten for first place by J. Butler, a Southland competitor, who got and maintained a flying start from the j 30yds mark. He started, again from scratch, j in the Mile Race, but his earlier efforts must have tired him, for though catching the leaders he dropped out after goins: half the distancs. Ho ruus prettily, ar.d "boars the marks of useful and consistent training. The n-umber of entries received and competitors forward in_tbo cyclLng races must have proved surprising to those who believe that that class of competition is a decadent eport. There were more cyclists forward than has bsen the case for many years, and although their numbers included few who ihad previously won glory on the track, their performances furcrieihed much of the day's entertainment. The handicapper proved himself a wise and far-seeing man, for close and hotly -contested finishes were the order of the day. And, more pleasing still, there was a notable absence of the too common features of cycling : every man and machine on the track was out to win. Only one© did a competitor come to grisf, and he, with conspicuous wisdom, fell harmlessly on the sre-s. D. Stevenson •was the only cyclist who won many prizes ; and he was apparently a " dark horse," who had been placed on limit marks. A noticeable, and to come extent, a disturbing feature of the majority of the competitions was the smai? proportion of these who entered who actually placed themselves •before the starrer. This was, for imstia.nce the case in the 100 yds Championship. The names of nine runners appeared on -tin© programme, and those interested jubilantly anticipated a hotly contested race. Instead, only two were forward, and the first prizeand the Athletic Union's championship were easily won by H. H. Brinkman, a premising Christchurch runner. This inconsistency on the __par^ of athletes as peculiarly disapnointii),^ in view of the 'fact that the Athletic Union's championships are this year , Leing competed for locally. Instead' of a very few local entrants, one might wieil have looked for 3aTge fields from at least the chief sporting centres in the South Island. The championships are New Zealand cTi«inip]on.s.hips, and ar© annually eorrmeved for in one or other parts of the Dominion : but if the coveted cards axe to be carried off with little * competition the term " championship " loses much or all of its fcignficance. It was suggested on the l*t, and seemingly /with timeliness, that the local Caledonian Society might greaiQy improve matters in this respect by pucung on ite programme a big. Sheffield handicap, thus attracting a- larger number c 5 competitors from far afie&d, jwho, if they did not stimulate more ■interest among the spectators, or affect the gate, would at least, at a. time like the present, give the championship card an added value. Tnis remark, of course, applies particularly to running-events. There •waa better all-round competition in other ibranehes of the games in which championship occurred. Four strong and skilful ■men attempted" to beat Frank Forde. the lnvercargiil athlete, who has for long held «L record for throwing the 161b hammer mft. Needles to cay, they failed. Forde ;

aid«d by a strong ■wind, tßnew his hammer a. distance o£ 121 ft 2£in, and none of the others came within earns feet of his mark. There was also fair competition in the Highland fling aha* 6eaufiTtreus events, in connection with boSn of which there was a championship, held in each case by Campbell Smith, of Pahiatua. The latter was not present, and the honours ware yesterday given to Mr 3. Stewart, of Inverear.giU, "who seemSS to win without great difficulty. , ! Following are tiie results : — GRAND WRESTLING COMPETITION, 12st 41b and under (Border, Cornish, and Catch-as-catch-can). The best three falls in each style. Prizes: £7, £3 10s, and £1 10s. ! The forty-seventh annual gathering of the Caledonian Society of Otago was continued on Saturday, when there was again ' a large attendance fii the public. The '■ weather was, as on the first day, threatening and a heavy wind swept the ground, this time from the south-west, and interfered to some extent with the various i events, and to a very great extent with ' the comfort of the public. Rain fell on more than one occasion, and was quite sufficiently heavy to cause every bodvto make a rapid move for cover. Everything ! went very smoothly, and the extreme punctuality with which the events were got off was remarkable. It seemed as ij all the officials actively engaged understood exactly -what- was required of them, and carried it out, whatever it might be, witn commendable despatch. The takings for the day reached £175, which is a few pounds teas thanjast year, when the amount was £182 9s 6d. For the first day the takings were £24 15s more than l&st year, so that on the two days there is an increase of £17 5a 6d. t The following are the results of the day s sport : — QUGITING HANDICAP AND CHAMPIONSHIP, 21 yards, 21 points a score (James Penman,, Kaitangata, champion).
