RIFLE SHOOTING.

OTAGO RIFLE ASSOCIATION. ANNUAL PRIZE FIRING. President, Lieuitenant-'colonel Smyth"; vicepresidents — Lieutenant-colonel Smith, V.D., Lieutenant-colonel Allen, Lieutenant-colonel Stoneham, Lieutenant-colonel Myers, and Major Hislop; hon. treasurer, Lieutenant! Lacy; hon. secretary, Lieitenant Goldenstedt ; council — one member from each corps or rifle club affiliated. i The thirty-eighth annual prize firing of the Otago Rifle Association was commenced at 8 a.m. on New Year's Day on the Pelichet Bay range, and the day's operations •were brought to a close at a late hour in the evening. The weather at the commencement of the day was excellent, ■but the wind and light became very bad towards the finish, with the result that some men wJio commenced with good scores broke up during tihe day. The entries were not quite so good — 103, or 19 short of last year. The range officer (Captain Proudfoot) deserves a word of credit for the excellent work which, with the assistance of Lieutenant Murray, be ; put through. During the morning Colonel Smyth, £«d Captain fiickey, A.A.G., visited the range, which has been considerably improved since last year by the introduction of six newtargets, which, with those already existing, afforded facilities, for 16 squads, this having the effect of getting the shooting •off with the greatest facility. Taken all round, the shooting was not quite so good as that of last year, this probably being accounted for by the bad weather in the afternoon. During the day there were five possibles obtained. Telephones from the firing point to the targets were a great convenience, and were erected by members of the Dunedin Engineers, under Sergeant Wills. The secretary (Mr P. Goldenst-edt) deserves a word of credit for the earnestness with which he undertook his arduous duties. .The firing will be concluded to-day, when an innovation will be the introduction of 800 yds and 9Coyds ranges. The following are the results of the various matches : — HALLENSTEIN MATCH, 200 and 300 yards. Seven shots and two optional eigbters at eaoh range: — 2CO „ 300 jde. y-ds. Tl.

The eighteenth annual prize firing competitions of the Otago Rifle Association were brought to & conclusion on Saturdayevening, alter a hard day at the range- 1 at Pelichet Bay. The weather was very Lad, the exceedingly choppy wind affecting the shooting in a marked" degree. A featureof Saturday's shooting was the work at the 800 and 900 yards' ranges in the Otago Match, Captain Wain (Studholme) attaining the possible at the 800 yards range. During the day the competitors, through Captain Wain, made- a presentation to Captain Proudfoot in recognition of his excellent services during his long connection with the association. Following arc the scores in the various matches : — \, OTAGO MATCH, 800 and 900 yards. Seven shots and two optional sighters at each raii^e.
