GIRTON COLLEGE.

DISTRIBUTION OF PRIZES. t Prize day, the closing ceremony of the scholastic year, was -more than erer a success at Girton College on the 7tb; when a number of parents, friends, 'ex-pupils, and well-wishers 'generally assembled td witness a jtemarkably pleasing programme. Bowfe of flowers, palms, and statuary graced the foreground of the stage. The walls were almoet hidden by picture studies, land and seascapes, and other creditable black-and-white work, which, included" the humorous, the useful, the. bizarre, the sombre, beautiful, and the fantastic. The- whole formed a most interesting, if miniature, aart gallery. All the drawnrgs were bypupils, and, as the Principfal (Miss Ross) stated, the worst had been put' up together '■ with the beat. The " worst," however, in this case seemed good, and all the sketches seemed to advertise the abilities of the artists. The long, rows of desks, empty, Awaiting the arrival of the scholars, were Also in a way beautified. In place of the pen and ink well of everyday was set before each place a rose in a vase of water. The pupils having entered, and greeting exchanged bet\yeen teacher 'and taught, the programme commenced with a recital by Miss D. Duthie, of the XIII Chapter of the First Book of Corinthians, "Though I apeak with the tongue of men I and angels." Miss Duthie conveyed a telling interpretation of the powerful phraseology and -convincing logic of St. Paul. " Fleur de Neige " was the title of a play spoken in the French by nine of the pupik, who seemed quiie at home in the language, and the wonderful melody of the French symphony was apparent in the Wood Nymph'e song. The characters wer-a sustained as follows :— l»a;Reine, Miss A. Carson ; Fleur de Neige, Miss XL Pinel ; Le Prince, Miss H. Tame; Miroir, Miss R. \ Jamieaon ; Chasseur, Miss I». Peterson ; Wood Nymphs, Mis6e3 K. Levi, O. Cowie, and R. Brundell. Recitations were ably rendered by Miss F. Smith and Miss R. Isaacs. A new item., and an excellent one, \va=> the class singing, which has been conducted by Miss Robertson. I'ne singing of the pretty little coon lullaby, "'Kentucky Babe," was in itself a sufficient indication of the high standard already attained. The arithmetic practice displa3 - ed lightning calculations, in which 13 young ladies took part. Th 6 best part of the programme v/vls Act I, scene 3, from King Richard 11. Miss A. Au-stin took the part of the monarch, Miss D. Duthie that of John of Gaunt, Mies R. Hayward, KoHngbroke ; ili«« J. Jacob-- the Duke of Norfolk; Mi*B X. Rico, the Loixl Marshal ; Miss L. Tomkinson, the Duke of Auruerle ; Mies B. Fana and Miss I. Gresrorv, heralds ; and Misa H. Mollison and Mi«s M. Harper, attendants. The facenc ended amid a tribuio of well-deserved applause. The phjsical drill was pretty and graceful, the coloured scarves used lending brightness to wliitt might otherwise- have been considered too mechanical. Medals, certificates, and prizea having !>een presented by the Principal, addresses were given by the Rev. W. Aitken, Rev. H B. Gray, and Mies Roes, M.A., the principal.
