WIST COAST OIL BORP. (FROM OUR OWN CoRRESPONENT.)

GREYMOUTH, December 9.

The Kotuku petroleum bore is getting into softer country. At a little under 400 ft the gas increased rapidly, until at about 420 ft it became so strong, that the pressure threw out the water in the bore required for the " water flush system," which is now being used. It also developed a Tieavy gas pressure inside the hollow rods, and burst the rubber hose connecting the hydraulic pump with the drill stem, causing a suspension of boringj for the time being. Tfiere is no water in this bed, as the water is successfully, cut off above. The hole is a dry one so far, with the exception of a little oil, sand, and debris being thrown up at in* tervalß. Boring will be resumed when, the gas pressure has eased down. Meanwhile other work is being proceeded with.
