ORDINARY MEETING,

The ordinary business meeting was then held, Cr Driver being in the chair.

COBRESPONDENCE.

The Chief Engineer for Roads wrote enclosing authorities for a vote of £200 for the Milton to Coo m be Hay road and £100 for the Clarendon to Berwick road.—/ Cr Haggart moved that' the engineer lay off the road round the crooked bridge, and that tenders be called for the work for next meeting. — The motion was carried, and the engineer instructed to proceed .with the '-■"''Clarendon-Berwick road. Thomas - Mackenzie, M.P , drew „the •council's attention to the vote for the erec-' tipn of a brdige 'at Taieri Mouth, and suggested that a conference be held between the local bodies interested; he would be pleased to attend same with the view of getting the bridge erected.— James Allen, M.P., wrote on the same subject, statin? that he also would be pleased to attend the conference. — The Chairman said they had £3000 promised for the bridge, and the estimate was between £6000 and £7000. Something would probably have to be done, for the settlers there were crying out for a bridge, and the old punt was done. He thought a.^onferenee as suggested was, desirable. He still maintained that the Taieri County ought to bear half the cost instead of a third.— Cr Begg : If we do have a conference, where are the funds to come from ? The Chairman : Get -mother £2000 out of the Government. I suppose.—Cr Begg : Ido not think it is any use mincing matters at all. Ido not think Bruce County is in a position to put a. bridge there. It was no use entering into works for which they could make nc provision. He thought, however .""a. conference - wo u.d do no h<irm, aid fcuifge&ted that the chairman ami Crs llaijgait, Bell, Tough, and Begg be authorised to represent the council at such a coim-rencp. -Cr Haggart said he believed that the Govcnment must ultimately find the fund^ wherewith the bridge va_s to !>e built: the council bimply could not p;o\ide tiio amount as^ked. — The n.otion via* carried.

The engineer's report contained the folI lowing: — The metalling of road leading from Milburn to .pho^fcha*© wk>tlcs is now completed as far as the 6um voted would do it. The formation of road- to James Sutherland's has made fair •progress. Timber has been sent to Waihola to replace the landing etage at the jetty. The sluice-box at the mouth of the auxiliary drain, Inchclutha. was partially damaged by high tides in the river at the begininiirur of tibe month, the bottom beinig soaured out at one corner and the box sunk an>d the sluice lids will j not work.
