GORE AGRICULTURAL SHOW.

(Fbou Oob Special Repobteb.) GORE, December 1. The Gore Agricultural and Pastoral As~<JWtion's twenty-6eventh annual show was commenced io-day in perfect weather. The entries, many of which constitute a record, •show that the popularity of this annual fixture ig on the increase. Cattle, sheep, and dairy produce were judged to-day, and to-morrow horses, pigs, poultry, and dogs will be taken. The entries for cattle were about the same as last year, but it is a matter for regret that there were no entries for the Polled Angus class. The •horthorn section was distinctly creditable and Mr W. Waddeli, of Waikaka Valley, scored heavily, carrying off the champion certificates for the best bull and the best cow, besides getting the most points for shorthorn cattle. The Ayrahires, as regards quality, were probably th« best yet 6hown at Gore. The Jersey class was poorly, represented, there being but one entry. The crossbreds made a. useful exhibit. Some good milkers were shown, and the entries were generally good. The fat cattle were of v excellent quality. On the whole, the cattle were better than those shown last , year. The entries in 1907 numbered 65, as -< *gein«t 63 this year. The sheep were the feature of the day, the entries being phenomenal, and the animals in good condition. The English Leicester* were *n .exceptionally good lot, notably those shown by Mr A. Murdoch,- of Riversdftle. The Downs formed another strong cUrse, and the Corriedales were again in evidence for excel-

lenoe. The Lincoln and Border Leicesiens were subject of a good Ueail of favourable criticism In the Romney Marsh sectione entries were again very good. There were some fine rams, and ail *be animals showed points of breeding. The wool wag good, and their condition satisfactory. Among the crossbreds the- strongwoolled ewes, with lambs at foot, made a good' showing, as did the pens of ewe and wether hoggets. The entries for sheep this year numbered 273, as against 225 in 1907. There was a slight falling off in the entries for dairy produce, but what this section lacked in quantity it more i ban made up in quality. The exhibit of fresh butter was altogether highly creditable. The cheeses, though few, were of excellent quality, and the oatcake, 6con>es, «akes, etc., were a splendid advertisement for the housewifery throug-hout this fertile and productive district. In addition to other attractions, there was a fine show inp of agricultural implements, and a good exhibit of all kin-ds of vehicles. The first day of a show is usually the most prosaic, wso the attendance was by no means large. The show was opened under the best euspioee, and the general _ arrangements reflect credit on the executive. The working and yarding triaJs for sheep dogs, held in the afternoon, were of an interesting rature. The entries? numbeftad 7-15.
