NASEBY
December 5. — Tne weather here is exceedingly hot and dry, very little rain having fallen for over a month. Previous to this the high winds which were prevalent had completely sapped all moisture from tho surface of the ground, leaving it bone dry. In consequence, the turnips and other crops are faring badly, and grass is going brown and withering in huge patches. . Last night large fires were burning on the Mount Ida Range, and up to a late hour were still burning. This , morning the greater part of the range is covered with smoke. " Shearing is commencing pretty generally throughout the district, though on some stations work is "being hindered on account of the lack of shearers. •Reference was made at the last meeting ©f the Middiemarcji Court to the retirement of the 'magistrate. Mr J. M*Ennis. Messrs O E. Davey (Naseby), F. G. Duncan (Dunedin), and W. A. Patterson (clerk of the court) all spoke of the unfailing courtesy end goodwill that had existed between the Bench on the one hand, and the Bar and the public on the other.
