THE SALVATION ARMY.
SELF-DENIAL WEEK RESULTS. The annual eelf-denial week in connection with, the Salvation Arniy closed on the 22nd, when a meating' "characterised By earnestness and enthusiasm' was held in the Army Barracks and at which the declaration of the results was Announced. After the usual devotional exercises were> cnocluded Staff Captain Dixon,- in "the course of a stirring speech, remarked that there was every indication that the success which had accompanied their previous efforts was abundantly^ assured this year. The residents of Dunedin were greatly interested in €he~ splendid work performed by the Army, and the appeals of collectors had almost invariably met with a most generous response, for which they had his heartfelt thanks. Last year £450 was the amount named by the Committee of Management to be raised by\ the Salvation Army in Dunedin. This amount had been increased, however, by the sum o£ £130, which made a grand total for last; year's effort of £580. Phis was tho amount which had been set down thie year as the expected contribution to the selfdenial fund, and he was very hopeful that the sum' raised in their oresent campaign would reach this figure. The .money collected through the week was arriving continually throughout the evening, tho names and -amounts collected being read out by the staff c&ptain amid a scene of great: enthusiasm. The result of the endeavours of the children's section was at length announced as totalling £38 17s y 6d. end tho main section £444 18s 3d. Owing to the weather conditions prevailing many of tho collectors had not put' in an appearance, ..and a fairly large, member of contributions were still outstanding. Staff Captain Dixon stated that the amount' received was very satisfactory, considering the fact that last year's high ""figures were due largely to two* big donations (one of £50 and one of £25). One of these had been reduced by £25 and the other not repeated. He however, anticipated that the amount now in hand would be considerably augmented v ithin the next day or two.
