WELCOME TO W. SQUIRES.
On Friday afternoon at the Provincial Hotel a reception wa>* tendered by the Otago Boxing Association to Mr W. Squires, the well-known Australian pugilist. There was a representative gathering of members of thp association, including Dr Roberts (president) and Dr Eugene O'Neill. Mr y. S. Myers was in the chair, and in enthusiastic speech welcomed Mr Squires to the city. He also mentioned that Mr Squires was a clean and fair fighter, and a true sport. On rising to respond to the welcome so heartily extended 'to him, Mr Squires was received with prolonged cheers. He said he was extremely pleased at th cordial reception ho had received. Throughout his tour of New Zealand he Had met some of the best sports in the world. Referring to his fight with Burns in Sydney, he said he thought Burns was a lucky man in that he caught him (Squires) out of form. He had already Riven it out that he purposed challenging the winner of the Burns-Jonh&on fight in Sydney on Boxing Day, and he hoped by thai time io get into condition and give a good account of himself. Other toa«te proposed were "The Otago Boxing Association " (re^prnded to by Dr Roberto) and "Patrons of the Sport'" (responded to by Mr W. Parker).
