BAND OF HOPE COMPETITIONS.
SIXTH ANNUAL FESTIVAL. At The Hanover Street Baptist Schoolroom en the 21st the sixth annual festival of the Otago Band of Hope Union was commenced. The attendance was very good, notwithstanding the extremely bad weather. The Rev. Jas. Chisholm occupied the chair, and there were associated with him il-eurs David Gain (president), A. Burnard (secretary), and A. £. Alcock (treasurer). After the UMia! d-ovotional exercises, the Chairman congratulated the union on the largely increased number of entries. The' competitions themselves were highly interesting, the children making the best of their efforts in the various sections, and their work reflects the greatest credit upon their instructors. 'i here were 14 other co-npetitors in this -<■ non, which was a most interesting one. lemperancc Dialogues (section I, two characters). — Irene Black and Ira Crawford (103 points) 1, J. Manson and A. Esquilant (102 marks) 2, David M'Pherson and Alf. Mazengarb (98 marks) 5. There were two
other competing pairs in this section. Marts were awarded, for each character. Elocution', Sixth Grade. Test piece, "The Open* Chasm" (J. H. Porte).— Lizzie Wakeland (82 points) 1, Ethel Churchill (80 points) 2, Jean Chisholm (79 points) 3. There were five competitors. The judge described the enunciation of the competitors as excellent. The marks in the elocutionary competitions were awarded as follows : — Gesture and deportment 5, quality of voice 5, production of voice, enunciation, and reticulation 15, pronunciation a.nd accent 20, inflexion and modulation 13, emphasis, etc., 12, conception and general interpretation 30— total 100. Mr Israel announced that he was judging the elocution on a standard prepared by himself, and which would be ■used in the technical classes. The programme for this evening is as follows: — Elocution (second grade, third grade (boys' section), third grade (girls' section), fifth grade juirls, 13 to 15 years). Singing: Juniors under 12 years, -and temperance anthems.
