WAIKOUAITI.

October 24. — A public entertainment was held in the Presbyterian Church on Wednesday evening iast in aid of the Presbyterian's Children's Ho.me ss Dunedin. The weather was cold and ehowery, and consequently the attendance was not large. The .Rev. J. J. Cairney occupied the" chair, and a good programme, consisting of songs and recitations, was presented by the members of the church Band of Hope, recitations being given by Ethel "W-hetter, Iza Malloch, and Robert Fleming; dialogue, rJesaie Rendall, Doris Reid, and Willies M'Gill; and solos were well rendered by Misses Cairns, L. H'axwell, Ina Summers, M Valentine, and Mrs Andrew Fell. Sister Evelyn, a deaconess of First Church, Dunedin, who was present, gave a v-ery interesting account of the commencement oi the home at Anderson's Bay, showing that there was a real need for such a building, and she asked for the sympathy and practical! assistance of church members, in order thai the work might be satisfactorily carried on. During the evening several suitable anthems were, heartily sung by the Band of Hope choir. At the close of the meeting Sister Eveline was accorded a hearty vote of thanks fox her interesting address. " The country in and around Waikouaiti is now looking at its best. Splendid sb.ow.ers have fallen during this week, helping the grass and crops very materially, *nd if warm weather follows there should soon be an abundance of feed. Fruit trees everywhere are looking ■well, and give promice of big yields. The grass is coming strongly on the new tennis courts and bowling green, a-nd it is probable that the latter wiTl b© opened for play early in November. Those of the local anglers who know tho Waikauaiti River weM are still securing some fair baskets of treat. The fish, however, »r« mostly small, running from lib to 21b, but an occasional eight to 12 pounder is captured. The river is keeping clear, and in good fishing condition, and appears to be well stocked.
