THE RECENT SNOWFALL.
LOSS OF SHEEP IN NORTH OTAGO.
OAMARU, August 26. There has been a fresh fall of snow on the Kakanui Mountains, and from appearances it seems to have been a fairly heavy one. Very slow progress has been made with the saving of sheep that were caught by the snowstorm a<t the beginning of last month. One runholder at the back of Livingstone states that the loss will be about 50 per cent., but the general feeling is that this ifi an. under estimate. Probably the greatest loss has been on the Hakataramep Station, where the snow still lies deep. The bodies of many of - the sheep that are now being found indicate that they, were smothered by the first Ml. For any exact idea of the losses the mustering in November must be awaited so far as. the large stations are concerned, while on the smaller runs they will generally be reduced by the active • Trr^sures taken immediately after the first fall.
