OAMARU HARBOUR BOARD.
QUESTIONS OF POLICY. (Faosi Oub Own Corrbspoitokni'.) OAMARU, August 31. 'At the Oamaru Harbour Board's monthly meeting to-day a, report was made indicating that the board is still endeavouring to hire a dredge to clear the deposit of shingle at the entrance, which is accumulating. A motion by Mr Rose to rescind a previous resolution of the board so as to allow necessary repairs to be made to the old dredge to enable her to do work which is becoming necessary in the swinging basin was rejected by 9 votes to 2, it being considered by the majority that the hire of another dredge would be a more- inexpensive method of doing the work. The Chairman mentioned that the bill for a loan*bf £50,000 to provide a new dredge was almost through the Legislature, and would probably become law in a day or two. The Standing Committee was instructed to take steps to have the policy of the board in respect of the new dredge laid before the ratepayers as early as possible. In the Baltic Sea more wrecks occur than. In any obher part of the world, the average being one -wreck a day all the year Tound. In last week's Gazette the Commissioner of Stamps (Mr C. A. Hickson) acknowledges the receipt of £2 10a 3d, forwarded to the Deputy Commissioner of Stamps at Ohristohurch by some person unknown with the memorandum : " Amount due to the department for a breach of the Stamv Act .
