August 29.—A meeting of the Presbyterian Church Band of Hope was held on Wednesday evening last. Mr William RendaJ} occupied the ohair, and there waa a very good attendance, despie counter attractions. A number of hyimns were sung brightly an 3 heartily l>y a large choir, composed of members of the band, and solos were well i-enaered by Misses M. Chiatie, Dolly Stewart, L. Maxwell, and Mrs Andrew Fell, while recitations were nicely given by three of the younger members—viz., Misses EUa Dempster, Isa. TtfaJlooh, and Adeline M'Gill. After the first part of the programme -was concluded a very telling and instructive address was given by the Rev. Jumee Clarke, of P-almerston, hi« subject being " The Physical Effects of the Use of Alcohol." Scene time ago the superintezio'eii't (Mrs G. J. L. TLerr) invited the children to frame tiheir pledgecards, and she offered to present several prizes to those who could show tile prettiest designs and the best work in this direction. Aa a result of the competition a very interesting display of the children's work was exhibited at the meeting, and the prizes, 1 -which were distributed by Mr Clarke, were

awarflea as follows:—Girls: Hisses Acfeliro MGill, Mary Jane M'Gill, Clarice M'DougaJl, , and Lizzie Maxwell. Boys: Eric Jamieson, Alex. Fleming, Robert Fleming, and Willie M'Gill. A very hearty vote of tiianks was accorded Mr Clarke for his interesting and convincing address, and the meeting was brought to a close by the chairman pronouncing tbe benediction. A combined team, representing the Waikouaiti and Dunback Draughts Clubs, met at P»lmerston on Friday, the 28th inst., and played a match with the Pahneraton dub. A large number of players took part in the 'contest, which was very keenly tought, bu* the local men proved too strong lar their opponents, and the ntotch ended—PaJmerston, 48 games; Waikonaiti and 'Dunback, 33. The visitors thoroughly enjoyed their outing, and were delig-hitea with the reception given them. A return match will probably take place shortly. A striking feature of the maitch was the success which followedx the - "duffers" of the Waikouaiti team. The annual OddteHows' ball, which waa held on the 26th inst. in the Public Hall, was quite *s largely attended and as successful *s *ny of former years. There "were a good many members ef neighbouring lodges present, and dancing was indulged in vigorously until 2 o'clock a.m. The music was supplied by Messrs Yates and Beafh, of Dunedm. Mr Jas. M'Gill made an efficient M.C., and the catering was in the capable hands of Messrs Crocome and Jaiaieson.
