THAW IN NORTH OTAGO. (Faoic Ou» Own Cohrkspomdimt.)

OAMARU. August 30.

A very warm wind has been blowing for the last 24 hours, and promises a rapid! thaw Of. the show on the hack country. During the part 'week or so one or two of the larger -stations have succeeded in getting portions of their, flocks down country, where- they can be fed. Perhaps after* tha present thaw a better idea of the losses will be obtained.

A correspondent at Becks writes: "Wo have beeil visited in this district with the greatest snowstorm on record, according to the testimony of the oldest residents. Stock _ of all kinds has in consequence suffered* very severely, and the losses, which in most oases ' are not yet aecertainable, will 1 be very great. Owing to the dry seasons -we have- lately had, the farmers have nob been "able -■• to grow feed in quantities to meet such t an emergency— the existence ' of the -late fall of ...snow, now extending to the eighth _ week^* — and - what, they . were able' to produce has now\, all but disappeared. Fortunately, , «<- thaw 'has now set in which, for the sake of; j. all concerned j " it is hoped, may continue until the e'nov has wholly disappeared. Tha great hardship and losses experienced- by", settlers in the neighbourhood are such, so many think, as should be brought under the favourable notice of the Ward Govern, ment."
