THE WINTER SHOW.

SCHOOL CHILDREN" S ESSAYS.

PRESIDENTS PRIZES. Mi- H. V. Fulton, s&cretarv of the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society, has furnished us with the results of the school children's essay competition for the president's prizes, rthe subjects being the best description of the exhibits displayed at the winter show, and the value of the show as touching the agricultural, pastoral, and dairying • interests. The judge, Mr T. W. Kirk, of the biological section of the Department of Agriculture, in submitting hie report expressed regret tbat 'the results of the competition had not been made public sooner* but stated that frequent absences from Wellington and pressure of work had prevented it. - He had been particularly struck witli the conciseness of description evidenced in many of the papers, but he regretted that a number of the best essays had to be thrown out owing to the conditions of the competition not having been complied with. The following are the results : — Class I {for boys and girls between the ages of 13 and 16 years). — Dorothy Boyle, Albany Street School, 1; Ruby J. Hellyer, Anderson's Bay School, 2; Leslie MAdam, Anderson's^ Bay School, and Marion Taylor, Arthur Street School, 3. Class II (to be written by a boy or girl under 13 years of age). — Thelma Menziee, Arthur Street, 1; Winifred Miller, St. Leonards School, 2; R. J. Maunsell, Arthur Street School, and Ruth Pierce, Arthur Street, 3.
