CHAPTER I.— After leaving Oxford, Lord BalliiLa and his friends Michae-1 Dun-das, enter into pa-rtnership in a mo tor- building enterprise, trading as Dundas, Kenmare and Co. On the morning when the story opens a visitor is announced who introduces himsslf as Mr John Archer, of -New York. H« tells Lord Ballina that ho wants a car built, and that he is prepared to pay d£3ooo on condition that it is constructed with, absolute secrecy. Bajlin-a agrees, and. Mr Arch-er, on receipt of a signed agreement, pays half the purchase money on the spot. .ELe alleges that ho wishes to avoid being forestalled in patenting an invention. He explains the drawings, which provide for a curious steel-lined well in the front of the car. On Archer's invitation Lord Ballina dines with th« American and his daughter Muriel. The latter his lordship finds to, be a most charming girl, and he is strongly attracted to her. ' * CHAPTER ll.— Next day, Mr Archer being busy, his daughter proceeds to the works of Dundas, Kenmaie and Co., and Lord Ballina shows hei round. _He is most courteous and attentive, and Miss Archei on her part is fain to admit that she finds the young Englishman extremely interesting. Meantime Mr Anrchear pays a visit to an Italian restauxan.t in the n/eighbourhcod oi Wardour street. There he meets an Italian engino&r, by name Paleotti. ATohei tells him what has been, done abcrat the car, and with subdued voices and an air of mystery they discuss some further plans. The Italian, Paleotti, announces that he lias conrp'ler'ued his task, and explaining that the restauranteur is an Anarchist and that the device is hidden ou the premises, he takes Archer by a secret passage to see the result of his labours — the instrument of ■"evenge.
