COURSING! THE DUNEDIN CHALLENGE STAKE.

FIRST DAY. . After a postponement from the previous ,day, owing- to "the inclemency of the \ weather, the Dunedin Plumpton Coursing i Club commenced its final meeting of i the .season at Forbury Park on Thursday, j The .morning was very threatening, but the ' committee decided to make a start, and the first pair of dogs in the slips .were sent ■ jiway about 1.30. The afternoon was verycold and wintry; but with the exception of a couple of 'showers no Tain fell during tbe round which was got off. The plumpton, as a -result of the recent rains) was rather | sodden, but no surface water, owing to the committee outting drains, was visible, except a couple of pools which lay near the j escapes. In- order to give the game every | chance, the hares were favoured with long slips, and this occasioned several no-courses through the dogs failing to sight their quarry. This fact rather prolonged, the, running of the first round, and as the light became very bad the committee' decided to adjourn till the following day. Mr T. ! Kett acted as judge, and Mr A. Aitken j as slipper, and the officials lent valuable j assistance towards making a pleasing day's j sport. The following are the details of 'the first round of the stake: — fDUNEDIN CHALLENGE STAKES. There was not much in the run-up between Jessie's Dream and Roosevelt, and after working the game winning honours rested ■with tie former, when the game escaped. JDros3 Lake raced away from Sylvanite, and killed from the first turn. Keighery's Gift led Poseidon by four lengths and outI worked him on the game until the puss gained cover. Golden Days led Royalist i by five lengths, arid, after doing nearly all the work "" in a brief course, wound up with a kill. Scottish Chief raced away from Feahabaht and had all the best of the bout. Royal Artillery killed in an accidental "bye, obtained through St. Patrick's Day not coming to the slips. Goldspur and Polar Star failed to locate their quarry -when . first slipped. _ The farmer then led by close on three/lengths and had the winning margin in his favour when the game escaped. Harbour Light began badly from the slip, but raced past Blonde and beat him pointlessly in a brief course. Diffident lost three or four lengths ' through getting: unsighted at the slip, out ■ closely disputed matters with Silverstream i when she joined in the work. The latter had the flag in his favour at the finish. I Awapuni led Thoughtful by six lengths, ' and was principally responsible for the work which drove to cover. „. Wolfe's Schnapps led Diamond Aurum, but slipped up at the turn, and in a brief course the latter put him well out by a kill which left the score in favour of the former. Darlinghurst led Fontenoy by half a, dozen lengths and beat the latter throughout a short bout. Prevention raced away [ from Floradora, and wound up with a kill. I Sweet Ale had an easy win over Reform, { but the latter appeared to pet unsighted lin the run-up. Call Boy and Lady 'Fairfield ran a no-oourse, after both became unsighted from the slip. Lady Fairfield afterwards led and beat Call Boy handsomely. Erin's Pride led and killed from Better Nights. Blot Sheet had a fairly j comfortable margin over Queensbury in I their bout. Index beat Faugh-a-Ballagh !on a good hare. Braddon's Luck led i Lady Sockburn by three lengths, and after working the latter came in for a kill. Reel and" Jim Forward cannoned in the run-up, and the laitter lost a dozen lengths, but when he did -get in the former beat him on the game. Gold Band beat St. Patrick easily on a weak hare. Kilroy led Water-ma-rk by- over a. length and killed off the first drive. Nine of Diamonds raced away from Lady Molly and wound up a brief course by killing a bad hare. Salvator beat ! Continuance after a fairly/ close go bei tween the pair. The Whisperer led and outworked Wilful Witch at every stage of ! the bout. Rosewater raced away from ! and beat Wakeful easily. A good go took > place between Lord Clements and The ! Yoke. They were close together at the turn, which, viewed from the stand, appealed to be in favour of the former. A 1 good smavt interchange took place, and , after Lord Clements killed in & pool of ' water the flag was hoisted in favour of his i opponent. Te Rangipai killed in a nocourse, which took place through Bugle Call getting unsighted. Te Rangi Pai drew out in an interesting run up, and after working fairly well Better Nights cam© in for a kill. Diffident led Fontenoy by close on four lengths, and after turning came in for a clever kill. Poisedon and Jim Forward were slipped to a nocoarse through failing to get on the gam*. On the dogs being sent Sack to the slips Jim Forward led Poisedon by about four lengths, and won on speed, a good galloping hare getting away without being worked. Royalist led up Awa-puni, and after taking a couple of turns out of the game killed, beating Awapuni handsomely. Watermark led Continuance, and ddd most of the work which drove to cover. Diamond Aurum led Rose Water and turned. Rose Water nan wide, and coming back concluded with a cross kill. The last meeting of the season of the Dunedin- Pluinpton Coursing Club was concluded at Forbury Park on Monday, the rain holding off until the close of the afternoon. Th© Plumpton was in perfect order, and some of the courses proved exceptionally interesting. Mr J. Kett again acted as judge, Mr A. Aitken was slipper, and Mr Geo. Lethaby proved a most attentive and obliging press steward. The following is the result of the day's sport: — DUNEDIN CHALLENGE STAKES. Fourth Bound. Scottish Chief beat Mat3ierm«.cLiree. Silv-erstream beat Darlinghuxst. Gold Band beat Erin's' Pride. Bugle Call beat Nine o' Diamonds. Scottish Chief led Mathermachree by about four lengths and did most of the work that ensued up to the time the hare escaped. Silverstream led up DarlinghuTst by a length, after which the dogs were both close on the game, which finally got away. Gold Band 1 Jed up Erin's Pride, which was favourite-, I by three lengths, and had decidedly the • ibest of the course up to the time puss got • to th* escapes. In the third round Jim Forward led Diffident by about three th* latter falling in the work which ensued, and leaving Jim Forward to drive to cover. Braddon's Luck led Diamond Aurum up to -the game by a good length, and had the score in his favour when puss escaped. Braddon's Luck was first to the hare in the final with Jim Forward by a length. After this Jim Forward cam* in, and did most of the work which ended in the ganie escaping. The course was regarded as an ■undiecidied one, and on the dogs being again liberated Jim Forward led up by about alength, and afterwards did most of the work up to the time puss escaped.
