WELLINGTON, August 19. Mr A, L. Herdman, the Opposition candidate for the Wellington North seat, opened his campaign to-night with an address to the electors. Mr Herdman was well received, and wae accorded a vote of thanks and confidence. WELLINGTON, 20. At a meeting of the Wellington Labour Representation Committee it was decided to contest the six seats in Wellington and suburbs if funds were available. The nominations received at present are^ — D. M*LaTen, secretary of the Wharf Labourers' Union ; W. Jones, secretary of the Federated Seamen's Union ; C. Chapman, president of the Typographical F-ederation ; W. Wagstaff, secretary of the Carpenters' Union ; G. Campbell, organiser of the Political Labour League ; and W. Young, secretary of the Australasian Federated Seamen's Union. August 23. Mt Harrison, a Whangarei storekeeper, is to be the Government candidate for the Marsden seat in opposition to Mr Mander at the next election. He is an advocate of the .single tax and' the bare majority fn local option polling. Mr Sheat will oppose Mt' Witty for' the Biccarton seat. Mr Sheat is a farmer, and he took great interest in the recent farm labourers' arbitration case. Dr Chaptple is practically certain to contest the Tuapeka ssat against Mr Macphenson. Mr Scott will be the Opposition candidate. GRETMOUTH, August 24. The campaign for the Buller seat has been started by Mr F. F. Munro, who is now visiting Central Buller, where he is conducting an active canvas. CHRISTCHURCH, August 20. At a meeting of the Christchurch branch of the Political Labour League it -was resolved to announce Mr James Thorn as a Socialist candidate for Christchurclr South. A resolution was passed asking Mr D. 0. »Sullivan to etand ior Avon in the same interests. The secretary was instructed to make inquiries as to the cost of maintaining a Labour newspaper during the election period, and report at the nest meeting. Mr Robert Hogg will contest the Wellington South seat against Mr W. H. P. Barber, M.P., in the interests of the Socialists at the next general election. According to the "Waimate correspondent of the Oamaru Mail, Mr R. Meredith, exM.H.R.. has definitely- decided to contest the Waitaki seat iagainst Sir W. J. Steward. It is understood (the Post says) that Mr D. M'Kenzie has retired from the contest for the Hutt seat. The Timaru Herald says that Mr F. H. Smith, of Waratoh, purposes to offer himeelf as an Opposition candidate for Timaru, provided the • Opposition leaders do not select and put forward a candidate. The Cromwell Argus states: — "Quite a number of prominent Liberals have been requesting Mr James Horn, of Bannockburn, to contest the Wakatipu electorate at the general election. It is common report that he will do so, but we have the best authority for stating that so far Mr Horn has not given a favourable reply.
