ACTION IN WELLINGTON PEES BYTERY.
WELLINGTON, August 11
The Rev. J. Gibson Smith's book on the Atonement was referred to to-day at the regular meeting of the Wellington* Presbytery, of which the author is moderator.
The Rev. Kennedy Elliott gave notice to move an overture- of considerable length, setting torth that all Christendom holds and teaches that Christ by Ids obedience satisfied Divine justice; that this Presbyterian - Church holds and proclaims this same doctrine, as set forth in our standards (passages cited from the Westminster Confession and the Larger and Shorter Catechisms) ; that every minister and elder solemnly undertakes constantly to maintain and defend the same doctrine ; that a minister of the Church has published a book in which be emphatically and with scorn denied the truth of the said doctrine : that this Presbytery resolves to overture the General Assembly of the Church, indicted to meet at Dunedin on November 10, " for the upholding of the testimony of the Church, for the stability of the saints in th=ir faith, and for the maintenance of tho Church's position before them; that it is highly expedient to reaffirm and anew declare this Church's adherence to the doctrine of her standaids in such terms as the wisdom of the General Assembly may seem meet.'' The date ior discussion of the overture was not settled.
