INVERCARGILL D.L.F. LITERARY AND DEBATING CLUB.

Motto: "Excelsior."

A meeting of the above club was held in the South British Chambers, Esk street, on the evening of Tuesday, August 11. Shasta presided, while there were present Willow Brook and Luceda, vice-presidents; Homa, of the Gen-erai, committee; Midgie, librarian; ad 10 members.

Shasta intonated that S3 papers were inhand for the evening, which was open meeting, and it was decid-ecl to 'hold another meeting on Wednesd-aj evening-, August 12. L&a-dexs were then chosen for the. debate,, "Which has the Greater Influence on the World, Art or Poetry?" They are:— Art, Xso!» sxxd. Octava ; poetry, S-basta and ilidgrc. This d«bate will be held on September 9, andl th© social evening on September 16.

After this Lola read ■& paper on "How We W«ni a-Fishing in Days of Long Ago." This was a very entertaining d*scription of a( •picnic. Willowbroo-k gave a. viery interesting and instructive paper on '*jL "Visit to the Fire Brigade Station." "Wihioh is the Greater Factor for Success, Merit or Influence?" was a splendid paper by H*Try Gramophone ga/ve a very good paper on "An Adventure ir a Coal Mine." "Little Bit of Exercise" and "An Amazing Tangle" were two good papers by W«st Coaster, who is a regular contributor to the club. Two able papers from Cornish were "Because I'm Old" and "Untrodden Heights. La Belle, a new contributor, sent a nicely-written paper entitled "Home." We hope to receive more papers froni La. Belle. "Goneial Beading," by Happy Wag, was much enjoyed, especially as it was the first we have had from 'him for some time. Soni& selections' from. "The Weekly Weloome" were received from Una Trewin'non. Haweaite gave us a otiarming description of Hawea Flat, a ple^e quite new to all of us. Texas Jack sent a refresTiing.ly original paper on "Barbara Frie-tohie," and also a selection, "Told by a G<host." "Yesterday" was a good paper by Venetia Corona. Scots G-rey told in an entertaining manner of the different ways in which "farewells" are said. We are indebted to the Dunedin C!*b for the papers received from them. The ciub then, adjourned to meet again on the evening of W*dnesday, 12th inst. LUCEDA. Acting Secretary.

The ordinary weekly meeting of the above club was hel-d in South British Chambers, Eek street, on Wednesday, August 12. at 8 o'clock. Notwithstanding the fact that a maeting was held on Tuesday night, a fair number attended, including Shasta (president)' Luoeda and Willow Brook (vice-presi-denits), Miss Bobbie (secretary and treasurer!, and H-azeil, Hoina, and Millioent (of the committee).

A large number of papers from country D.L/.F. wei« received, half of which were read on Tuesday, and 'the other half on W«d<n€«d&y. A separate report will be written of Tuesday's meeting. West Co-aster's contribution was an excellent paper 011 "Winter." and Blue Violet's a very interesting •selection entitled " A Dialogue between Jauai&ry -and 1 July." "The Engineer of the Pennsylvania Express was the title of a very interesting selection from ilctani.a.in Rambler, w-hi-le a humorous selection entitled "No. 18 of Mrs Caudle's -Curtain Lectures '' was received from The Gramaphone, and caused some arawsem-ent. Giulia obose for her eubj'ect " Should the mother always uphold tihe father's authority ?" Krppdehoe gave us "An imaginary trip round the world " ; Bush Bey, "An M.P. visils the goldfields " ; Lady Esler, " Truth and integrity " ; Scribbler selected " Observations by Di- Andrew N-elson in the Illustrated Lon-ti-an News ' and " Science Notes in O"t'ago Witness." Areta selected a poem from the work of her favourite writer. Ella. Wheeler Walcox, entitled " Woajih While," and the papers were concluded by a very interesting description cif a " Tour round Ouiram." A letter was received from Mr Wallace, who has very kmd'iy conjjented to act as judge far the " Hope ' rw-mpehtion,

The following restrictions have been made in connection with Lord Wolseley's wordbnlifting competition : First — Only members or honorary nieinbens can compete. 15. L.F. may ba eligible by sen-ding -the sum of sixpence, and by co doing becoming an honorary member. Second — Inflexions of verbs as well as pluril-s of nouns are excluded. Third — No letter must be usc-d oftener than it occurs in the given words. Fourth — The possessive case of a noun is not counted a separate word from the noun. The judges for this competition are Lord WolseLey, Shaßta, Octava, and Willow Brook Luced'a moved, seconded by Bohva, that Gravel be elected an honorary member o? the club in recognition of the great interest hje take 3in th« club and the many papers he sends to help make our evemings a success. In regard to th-e state of affairs in connection with IjHe Dunedin CJub, Willow Brook moved, "That this chib conveys to our sister club in Cunedin our gratification on hearing that they are again rallying, and sincerely trusts that their efforts will not

be -unavailing in (raising the old club to its former proud position, and so maintain tihe Honour of Dot and the D.L.i 1 . generally. This piotion was seconded by Lord' Woleeley and carried, and I am sure fchat it is the wish of epic and all to see the Dunedin Club again in a flourishing ccKttdition. Miss Bobbie then moved thart a vote of thanks be accorded to Luceda for so ably acting as secretary during the last six weeks. .This was seconded by Hazel, and carried by acclamation. Lniceda in replying said that aba had been very pleased to relieve irftas Bobbie, and 1 her services would be available again if required.
