In the course, of a lecture before praotisinifj doctors at Vienjia, Professor Carl yon I Noorden, who enjoys a great reputation as $,a authority upon dietetics, made some very interesting utterances. With regard to th© various ourea for obesity tho prqV fessor 6tatedi that the best way to reduce one's weight is by simpdy avoiding certain fat-forming foods, such o,s butter, cream, sweets, puddings, and potatoes-. Lean meat, lots of green vegetables and. salads, and raw fruit should be- eaten. Ple-nty of walking exercise should be taken, uphill, as walkinpr on. the level is of very little use. As to riding exercise, the professor states that it is doubtless very good for ireducing the weight —of the horse. Professor yon Noorden also stated that if people were propori tionately 30|b too heavy for their height, it is high time they commenced weight-reduc-ing. Persons who work mentally and physically are in danger of using up the heart and fche arteries if they carry about too much -fat. Elderly people whose weight is not very much alj&vo the normal, should 1 not be advised to commence weight-reduc-ing. On th© subject of alcohol, ho states that bad though the excessive consumption of alcohol undoubtedly is, he would not favour its total prohibition, and even goes so far as to say that he considers people who cannot assimilate alcohol at all to bo somewhat "degenerate."—-English Mechanic.
