WAIHEMO COUNTY COUNCIL.

The ordinary monthly meeting was held at Palmerston on Saturday. Present — Crs D. M. Philip (chairman), J. Ross, T. Muir, J. Stenhouse, R. Matheson, G. Clark, J. O'Connell, and H. O'Neill.

REPORTS.

The Inspector reported that he had repaired all the roads in Bushey Riding which were damaged by the recent floods. He had yet to complete repairs to the Shag River Bridge, and the smaller bridge near it, and for this purpose would require to obtain 150 cubic yards of blue rock from Dunedin. A number of crossines in the other ridings were- still in a dangerous state, and there were a number of washouts on the roads still requiring attention. There was still a lot of snow lying in M'Rae's Riding, but he did not think the damage to county property would be very great. The roads", where damaged, were being put in order as rapidly as the means at his disposal would permit. — The report was received.

The Finance Committee reported recommending that accounts amounting to £240 15s 4d be passed for payment. — Adopted.

CORRESPONDENCE.

Jas. Chapman and a number of other Dunbaek and Blue Mountain ratepayers resident in Dunbaek petitioned the council asking that they be provided with a footbridge whereby they might cross the Shag River at all times. — Resolved that • petitioners be supplied with a plank, and the inspector to see that it was placed in position.

The Collector of Customs forwarded the usual return, showing that the amount of gold purchased from Waihemo County during th© month, of June last was 2100z.— Received.

The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote that the portions of the old road fronting sections 3 and 7, block I, Dunbaek district, could not be disposed of by the chairman's certificate, as the road had already been closed under the Land for Settlements Consolidation Act of 1900; the old road could, however, be dealt with under the provisions of the Public Works Ach — Letter received. — The Clerk reported that this matter of an exchange of roads was in the same position as it was at the commencement of negotiations.

The Railway District Engineer wrote, with reference to the orossing over the Dunbaek line at the N.B. corner of Palmerston township, that the improvements requested had been carried out by his inspector. — Received. The Hon. "W. Hall-Jones acknowledged receipt of the council's letter containing a list of grants required for road formation in Waihemo district, and advised that the matter had been referred to the Roads and Bridges Department.—^Mr Thos. Mackenzie, M.P., wrote promising to give the council's application, his support. — Received.

S. J. Curry. Hyde, wrote drawing attention to the state of the roal leading past his property. — The Inspector stated that the road was in good order; he had been over it §ince the letter was written. — Letter received.

Four applications were received for the position of surfaceman in Macrae's Riding. — J. Stanley was appointed.

Cr O'Neill, in accordance with notice given, moved that the general rate for Waihemo County during 1 the ensuing* year be Jd in the pound, payable in one sum on the Ist September. — Carried.
