DUNTROON.

August 17. — A social was held in the Defence Hall on Thursday evening to bid farewell to Mr A. M'Kenzio. who is leaving for Timaru. Mr Hamilton presided, and in opening- the proceedings, referred to the good qualities of Mr M'Kenzie, who rendered untiring service in the Sunday ec-hool and church. The Rev. P. S. Hay, in making the presentation, also bore testimony to the excellent work done by their guest as a member of the Church Committee, as a Sunday school teacher, and choir master. Mr M'Kenzie bore away with him the good wishes of the people. He then handed to him a nice Russian leather writing case, 6ilver mounted, and a gold albert, as a, token of esteem from the residents of Duntroon and surrounding districts. Mr Hinchliffe (captain of the football club) said Mr M'Kenzie was a valuable officer and pkrying member of the clvb — one with whom it was a pleasure to play. He was most exemplary, both on and off the field. Mr Tallentire. (the prosident of the football club) endorsed all that had been 6aid about Mr M'Kenzie, and then, on behalf of the club, presented him with a handsome travelling bag and a. eka.-o-.in.ji outfit. Messrs Crowley. A. Fyfe, and M. Stalker also eulogised Mr M'Kenzie, who made a suitable reply, thanking the donors and his club mates at football. Songs were rendered at intervals by Mice Richmond, Messre Rodger, Winchester, Crowley, and M'Kenzie. Refreshments were handed round, and the singing of " Auld lanjr eyne " closed the proceedings. It should be mentioned that members of the choir had previously presented Mr M'Kenzie with a handsome hymnal as a parting gift. School Concert.— The annual fchool concert came off on Friday evening in the Defence Hall, which was full to ox'erflowing. An attractive programme was presented. The cantata "Flowers Tn Concert" was given by the school children, the chorus parts being taken by the pupila from the senior and infant rooms, and the solos and dueta by I». Manlev and J. Gibson (rose), J. Crowley and O. Beck (lily), C. Sutherland (snowdrop), B. Beck (crocus), E. Johnston. F. Fyfe, J. Millen, C. Huxford, A. Wilson, M. Wise, J. Sutheiland, and L. Carling. The items were- very well received. The Mis-ses Pringle opened the 6econd part with a pianoforte duet. Action songs followed, by the pupils in the infant

room and the various standards, eacn and all being well rendered and heartily applauded, some of them being encored. At the close o-f the programme, refreshments were handed round, and after these had been done full justice to the hall was cleared for dancing. Great credit is due to Mr Rodgers and Macs Weir (the master and mistress) for the manner in which they taught the childern che action songs, choruses, and recitations. The committee desire to thank the parents for providing the refreshments, and Messrs Park and Cameron, who provided the dance music. The receipts totalled nearly £17.

The Primate's Visit. — fhe Primate (Bishop Nevill) preached to a crowded congregation yesterday afternoon. He preached at Kurow in the morning and motored to Duntrcon. where he was met. by Mr Seth-Smith. The Primate preached at Ngapara. in the evening. The >ffertoriea for the day were in aid of the fund which is being raised for a_ new -.hurch at Ngapara. The offertories at Kurow amounted to £3 6s and at Duntreon to £2 11s. About £20 is expected at Ngapara. The Weather. — We are experiencingheavy frosts at night, with fine days, but not warm enough to take the frost out of the gTound, except on sunny faces. Nearly all work with horses is at a standstill. A good thaw would be very acceptalbe.
