COMPLIMENT TO THE VISITORS. CHRISTCHURCH, August 12.

By way of compliment to the American fleet and to the national sport of America, the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club has included on the programme of its present meeting a National Cup Handicap, of 250SOVS, to which is added a. silver cup to the value of 50sovs. The race will be run on Friday, the third day of the meeting. The following vessels of the United States Navy, now in Auckland Harbour, are fitted with Babcock and Wllcox water-tube boilers. —

VISIT TO ROTORUA. ROTORUA, August 12.

)i the American fleet, with 10 officers of •H.M.S. Encounter, journeyed to Rotorua to-day by special train as the guests of the Government. This Prime Minister, Lady Ward, and Miss Eileen Ward, the Hon. J M'Gowan, and members of the Legislature, with their lady relatives and other guests, were also on the train, the total number on the trip being about 300. The party left Auckland immediately after the race meeting. A halt of half an hour was made at Hamilton, where the Government had provided tea in the spacious horse bazaar near th& railway station. The Mayor (Mr J. S. Bond) and •borough councillors welcomed the visitors, end accompanied them to tea. The Defence and School Cadets were lined up along the route from the station to the "building, and a large crowd shouted Maori cheers. The trip was made the more enjoyable by the fine weather, which saems likely to continue. Rotorua. which was r decorated and illuminated for the visit, was reached at 11.20 p.m.
