CANTERBURY.
Several members of the Charitable Aid Board ' inquired at the last meeting whether there had been any increase of applications for relief consequent upon the recent alleged -unemployed difficulty. The secretary replied in the negative. The chairman said an able-bodied young man applied for admission to the depot, b\rt upon learning tliat no -tobacco was provided he disappeared. Two others had signed the form of application for admission, but had not since been heard of.
At the Magistrate's Court, Timaru, the secretary to the Timaru Friendly Societies' Dispensary was charged, under section 12 of *' The Friendly Societies Act, 1882," with failing to send in proper returns of receipts and expenditure to the department for the years 1906 and 1907, The defendant admitted the offence, but said that he had been unable to get the accounts passed by the Board of Management in time to allow him to make returns to the department by the prescribed date. He was fined £3 and costs" (£2 11s).
The City Council has adopted the by-law making it compulsory to number all theatre seats and to issue tickets to correspond.
