HABITUAL DRUNKARDS.
GOVERNMENT'S ACTION CRITICISED. AUCKLAND, March 11. At to-night's meeting of the Auckland branch of the Liberal and Labour Federation the following resolution, moved by the president (Mr P. J. Nerheny), was carried: — "That thi? meeting disapprove of the Government's action >n committing habitual inebriates to Bell's Island, when the cost of their maintenance is borne by the taxpayer. This meeting i 6 of opinion that it would be much better if the Government pursued the policy of utilising the labour of habitual inebriates on, say, a .State farm or market garden, as suggested by the Prime Minister, pacing euoh persons a fair and reasonable wage for the work done, the balance, after reasonable provision is made for maintenance, to go to those depending on them for support. ' A superstitious man, named George Marble, of Worcester, Massachusetts, has just discovered that he proposed on November 13, 1907, was engaged on December 13, and was married on January 13, 1908. At the wedding there were 13 bridesmaids, and at the reception there were 13 courses and 39 gueste.
