WELLINGTON NOTES.

By Gvlooxbb,

March 14. capp&r, who journeyed across to Melbourne after the Dunedin meeting, returned from Sydney this week. He informed your correspondent that Mr Frank Mtoore intended to wait for the A.J.C. meeting with Dusky Morn and Catapult. Splendid Idea appears among the entries for the hack hurdle events at the Manawalu meeting. It is reported! that her stable mate, The Stake, is to be tried at the game, and will make his first appearance at Feilding at Easter time. The Dannevirke Jockey Club's ennual meeting passed off successfully on Wednesday and Thursday. The totalisator turnover amounted to £17,781, as compared with £18,980 last year. In bookmakers' fees the club received about £550. The Foxton ownertrainer, S. Messena, won the big race each day with the useful Gipsy King gelding Waitapu. He had the previous week acted as runner-up in the Wanganui Cup. He looks well in in the principal event at Masterton. with 8.13, &\h mwre than he carried on the second day at Dannevirke. The only other double winner at the meeting was Maid of Astolat, by Sir Lancelot — Dazzle, who has improved, and will fill the loss W. Whittaker sustained at Douche's retirement. She won both her races fairly easily at the end. The two-year-old fillyLady Menschikoff, from Sister Agnes, won the Trial Stakes easily. She acted as runnerup to Bunyan at Wanganui, and is to fulfil an engagement at Napier Park next week. The only representative of the Porirua stable was Gauze. She put down Waicola, stable mate of Waitapu, on the first day. but found the task of conceding Maid of Aetolat 171b a trifle beyond her. was given a run each day, but has not yet struck form. His stable mate, Blue Bell, by Conqueror, scored on the second day. King Post was saddled up three times, but the best he could do was to get third. Cyrene equalled his Woodviile record by winning the concluding event on the second day. Mulga Bill ran second twice, but does not look like turning out as good as Miss Vera or Truganini. The latter made her first appearance at the meeting in the colours of a Wellington sport who goes racing as- Mr " Melrose." She beat her opponents fairly comfortably, and will be heard of again. San Julie was galloped on in Cup, and did not appear on the second d-ay. Arc Light made her first appearance in the Cup in Mr E. J. Watt's colours. She (vas galloping faster than anything at -the finish, and is to accompany King Billy, Aborigine, and Lamsdorff to Auckland at Easter time. Osiris, by San Fran — Ismene, scored his first win in the Tahaorite Hack Welter on the first day. He is a stable mate of Moloch. The West Coaster, Mallet, by Malatua — Pauline, won the corresponding race on the second dsy He is «■ halfbrother to Maharanui. in the same stable. H. Hatch was the most successful rider at the meeting, with four wins. The Tasmanian horsemen, M. Dunn and W. Jennings, were riding at the meeting. Xhfi local koisea, Hiio &&£ Qvxus, yHch

have not raced" for some time, *re engaged at the Nelson meeting. The Porirua stable will be represented at the Napier meeting next week by Marguerite, Kurawaka, and Ataahua. The hurdlers seen out at the Dannevirke meeting were a very poor lot. Percy Johnston won on the first day with Bushranger, by St. Cyr — Barbette. Reservoir, brother to Douche, was successful on the second day, when Commander, a beginner at the game, acted as runner-up. Sir George Clifford has engaged Sister Anne, De Witte, Clanchattim, Stratagem, and Glenculloch at the Manawatu meeting. Moloch, winner of the Wairarapa and Wellington Cups, was seen out on both days of the Dannevirke meeting, but failed to show any form. He has. been engaged at Auckland at Easter time. The Porirua stable has also engaged a good team at Ellerslie. They include the jumpers Playmate, Maui, and Ataahua, also Gold Crest, Marguerite, Swimming Belt, All Red, and Ghoorka. The latter is engaged in both flat and hurdle events. He has been doing stud duty thi9 season. A. M'Connon, who rides the Porirua hurdlers, informed me this morning that- he jumped Ghoorka last season. The stable is in good form at the present time, and has won 17 races at the last four meetings. The Manawatu Racing Club has engaged Mr Joseph Ames, of Wellington, to work the totalisators at the- forthcoming meeting.
