FIRES.
ELTHAM, March 10. A large two-storey detached wooden building in the main street, used as a boarding-house, was found to be on x.re at 2 -o'clock this morning. Eighteen persons were in the house, but they had time to escape and to save some of their effects and some furniture. The fire started in the kitchen at the back of the lower storey, and would soon have licked up the building, but the water pressure was very pood, and the seat of the fire accessible. The flames were got under in about a quarter of an hour. The house was owned by Mr G. AY. Taylor, and occupied by Mr J. Cosscny. Insurances : On the building, £600 in the State office ; on the furniture, £150 in the Standard. The damage to the building is estimated at £250.
