If those present were willing to stand by the society, and say they knew of two or three who would assist, it would be a guide as to how they should proceed. The Chairman said he- would be pleased to take a show of hands as to who were going to support the society, and, on a show of hands being taken, added that he 'was glad to see all were willing to support it. The Panama Canal w;ll be 4-9 miles long, 49ft deep, and 200 ft wide. It will be capable of passinpr the largest ships from ocean to ocean in half a day. The distance between Liverpool and San Francisco will be decreased by 6000 miles. The whole western coast of the Americas will be much more accessible from Europe and Africa, and their eastern coasts much nearer to Asia.
