INFANT LIFE PROTECTION.

(Feoic Our Own Cobbesfondent.) AUCKLAND, January 29. Her Excellency Lady Plunket, who does much charitable work in an unostentatious; way, has come out into the open in support of the cause of the infant life of Auckland and district. Writing to tha press, Lady Plunket says: — "I am anxioua to establish in Auckland a branch of the Society for the Protection of Infant Life 1 ,, an organisation which already has working branches in Wellington. Christchurch, an 3 Dunedin." After describing how the society, works in the other centres, her Excellency! continues: "My attention was first called! to this subject by Dr Txuby King, and alsoin the course of visits paid to homes, hos'-* pitals, creches, and other similar institu.* tions in different parts of the Dominion*.I constantly observed infants which, hadl been received into these institutions in gt deplorable/condition, mainly owing to improper feeding. I will not trespass upon your space to describe the harrowing conditions of these little mites, but I desira to be allowed to combat the argument frequently advanced that 'a mother's instinct" will teach her how to feed her baby. It all mothers were able and ready to feed! their children, by Nature's method much/ could be thought of such an opinion, but this, unfortunately, 16 not the case. Ira the artificial feeding of babies there is at present no practical teaching easily available, although it is a wholly important subject, and the art of treating cow's milk in order to make it as similar as possible to tha natural food represents tho result of nianjj years of scientific research, whilst its pre* paration demands the greatest care. Undeo existing circumstancels a mother cannot possibly consult a doctor concerning the dailj) ups and downs of her baby. She is, therefore, dependant upon unskilled advice, and has to_ experiment upon her infant, often with disastrous results. The scheme which I have placed before your readers is nod an untried novelty. It is working successfully at Home and abroad. Dunedin ali ready supports several nurses and dig-* bributes 330 bowls of humanised milk daily.; and the appreciation of the nurses' useFulness is shown by the number of babies) that they are asked to visit. I wouldt earnestly appeal to those who are interested! in the future of this Dominion, and tqf ivhom the suffering of little babies brings! personal pain, to help in smarting a strong? branch of thia society in tho Auckland} Sistrict, and I shall gracefully receive anjji subscriptions which may be sent to me foii his purpose." Dr Truby King is sending- al specially trained nurse from Dunedin ttf lemonstrate and visit infanta at theitf nothers' homes. Tho Governor's wife is ikely to find that her humane efforts will neet with hearty and widespread support.
