Caught Napping.
When the commanding officer, making a to-^if of inspection of a Volunteer camp, reached the guard tent the sentry saluted, but di'l not, as he should, call out the guard to pay the officer a similar honour.
The officer was horrified,
"Don't you know your duty, sir?" he said. "Why don't you call out the guard?"
"Beggin' your pardon, sir, I ain't got much to do with it," answered the sentry.
"What on earth do you mean?" asked his superior.
"Well, sir," replied l the man uneasily, "you see. I'm a prisoner, and as the menvbers of th© guard wanted a hand or two at nap, they asked me if I'd mind standing sentry for a bit for 'em." This was too funny even for a martinet; he rushed away to hide his choking laughter. — Evening Standard.
