INVERCARGILL D.L F. LITERARY AND DEBATING CLUB.

Motto: "Union is Strength." The ordinary weekly meeting of the above club was held m the South British Chambers, EEk street, on January 29, the evening being devoted to the work of revising the rules. Shasta, took the chair in her usual capable manner, while the vice-presidents present were Hazel. Lola, and Millicent, and of the committee Eewa, Pakeha, Lord Wolseley, Boli-rai, Homa, and Miss Bobbie. After the minutes had been read and confirmed the revision of the rules was proceeded with and the folJowing aie the alterations that will shortly be enforced. Smoking Flax proposed that "Any D.L.F. inside Southland and outside Otago may becomo an honorary member of our club by paying an annual subscription of sixpence (not 2s as previously stated). The exception of Otago is made so as not to take members from the Ihmedm Club, although it is optional which club they join. ' Of course it is understood that an honorary member does not have the right to vote at our elections. It was then proposed that country members have the privilege of electing one member to represent them on the committee. The question of a limited number of office- - bearers was then dealt with. Smoking Flax proposed that the officebearers consist of a presiSent, two vice-presi-dents, a secretary and treasurer (these offices to be combined), a librarian (this member not to be a committee membei), and a general committee of three, one to be solely elected by country honorary members. Miss Bobbie moved that the election be hela in June instead of January, the term of office to bs 12 months «us previous. The reason for this is that the members during January are niost'y all away for holidays, while in the winter time the attendance is better and the interest keener. These motions were seconded and carriedThis concluded the alterations, and in due course correct copies of the rules will be printed, and each member sapplied with one. Intending country members are requested to send m their subscriptions, together with their correct names and addresses, to the secretary, who will enroll them as honorary members, and forward them a copy of the rules as soon as possible. An election will take place in June, when honorary members will elect their representatives. Next Wednesday is open meeting, and we hope for a gocd supply of papers. The club open as u=ual at 7.45. While speaking during the pvening Shasta said there were two things she wished to see •encouraged in the clul> — impromptu speaking cud the love of s?ood books. She therefore suggested that we have a debate, first with only notes to help us, and then one without; by this means we shall get used to impiomptu speaking. To en courage the love of gocd books Lola has kindly premised to give an address, winch I am sure we are all looking forward to, but this will be dealt with later on. Both of the=e are commendable suggestions, and deserve our hearty auuport. MISS ROBIE For the convenience of country members I enclose my address —Miss E. Hinton, Brunsfield Cottage, Spey street, Invercargili. A3TNUAL EEPOET The above olub held its meetings in the Oddfellows' Hall for the major portion of lest year, but found it convenient to remove to more suitable rooms during the year Under the able guidance of our pieeident. Hazel, we made good progress. At the beginning of the year we had a roll number of 12. It ha? now increased to 18 members Considering the number who resigned and those who were removed from, the district this shows an increase of about 10. During the year a magazine was published, which was very good, but although a large number were sold it did not prove a success financially. The annual social held in June proved a great success. D.L.F. from all paTts of "Hago and Southland were present. We also aau the pleasure of having Dot's company at the social. A mock banquet was held in the new room, whici afforded an enjoyable evening to all. An interclub debate was held in Dnnedin from which our .representatives returned victorious. The expenditure during the year was rather high, but we have a small balance to start our new year on. AUTO CARDS. I must apoloeise to those DLF who haie written to me for cards and have not received them yet The fact is my stock gave out more rapidly than anticipated, and I am every day awaiting a further c upply.
