PROJECTED ASCENT ABANDONED. INVERCARGILL, January 29.

Invercargill people have been looking forward "with curiosity to a projected balloon ascent by Mr 8.~ Murie, the wellknown cycle dealer of this -town, which wae to haVe taken place. to<lay. Mr Murie has had some experience in ballooning in the Old Country. He made a balloon and, was having it filled with coal gas preparatory to ascending- this afternoon when the feed-pipe from the gasworks •; leaked. In 'endeavouring to repair the defect a man named Gilohrist was partially asphyxiated and had to go to th& hospital, where he is recovering. A further attempt to inflate the balloon resulted in its spliting, and t,he abandonment of the ascent. Mi Mime, however, is prepared to try again.
