LAKE COUNTY.

February 1. — The weather up to Wednesday was extremely hot. On Thursday slight showers fell, since when the weather has been nmcli cooler. Harvesting is now pretty general, and notwithstanding tue dry weather experienced, it is said the yield will be fairly good.

Tourists. — A large number still continue to arrive in the district, the week-end trip on Saturday last being again well patronised. A moonlight excursion was made up the lake one evening last week some 70 persons taking advantage of it. The Queenstown Band were on board, - and helped to make the outing enjoyable.

Death. — Another old resident of the district in the person of Mrs Linwood passed away at her home at Frankton on Sunday last. The deceased lady, who was much respected. had been in failing health for a considerable time. The funeral tcok place at Arrowtown on Tuesday, Mr Robertson conducting the burial seivice. The late Mrs Linwood was 65 years of age, and leaves a husband and large family. Changed Hands.— The Bal'arat Hr.t'el, Axrowtown, has changed hands, Mr M Corcoran, of Dunedin, having purchased the property from Mr D. Richardson. Mx Richardson during his residence in Arrowiown proved himself a good citizen, taking a leading part in all local institutions.

Military Sports. — The sports in connection with the break-up of the W.M.R. camp were held on Saturday last, and were very suc©esfiful. The attendance was large, and all the events were well contested. The tug-of-war, W.M.R. v. Civilians, 10 men a-side, was a most exciting event. The W.M.R. team won, and still hold their unbeaten record, having won tho event seven years in succession.

Accident. — While competing at the military ©ports Corporal-bugler D. Richardson had "the misfortune to have his collarbone t>roken. The accident was caused through his horse falling at a hurdle.

liake County Council. — 'the ordinary meeting of the council was held at Queenstown on Tuesday last. The business transacted wa« of an unimportant nature. S<"nie time ego Mesera Cosgrove Bros . of Gibbston. made application to the ccuncil for conipensation for a road they had constructed for their own use, but -v?T ich had now been taken over for the use of the public. At the time the council decided that they coxi'd not grant the applicat'o i. but forwarded it on to Government. Tne member for the district, Mr Fraser, M.P , tised his best endeavours in the matter, and at the meeting on Tuesday a, letter was received from the Acting-minister of Public Works stating that, although Messrs Cosgrove had no legal claim, as they had made the load without authority, the department had decided (without prejudice) to grant them £55. being half cost according to the department's engineer. The Chairman stated that Messrs Cosgrove had accepted the offer The Mines Department notified that £50 had been granted fcrr Wilson and party's °cheehte road, head of lake, and £40 to Anderson and party. Macetown. The council decided to recommend the Mines Department to grant T. Scott £10 for prospecting at Deep Creek. Shotover. It was decided to apply for £10,000 of the £100,000 vote to be devoted to irrigation purposes for Olago. "Wanting More. — At the meeting of the take County Council on Tuesday a deputation, consisting of Mr M. J. Gavin, Mayoi. and Mr L. Hotop representing the citizens of Queenstown, waited on the. council, and explained that as the Premier and Minister for Lands, with Mr Fraser, M.P., would be visiting the district short y, it was proposed ito invite the Otago and Southland members 'io Queenshtown at the same time. It tould then be pointed out the very unjust snanner in which the district had been treated in regard to touiist and: other votea, it being considered that they were not getting a fair Bhare. By inviting the members to the district the latter would be able to see for themselves the scenic beauties of the different parts. The lavish manner in which Rotorua was treated in regard to tourist votes as compared with Wakatipu was referred to, »nd the deputation asked for the council's co-operation. Councillors said they weie in symipathy with the deputation, and a conisnittee was appointed to confer with the other local bodies re making arrangements Lower Shotover Bridge.— Some time will yet elapse before tenders can be called for this much-needed work. At the Lake County tJouncil meeting it was stated that nothing further could be done until the warrant from Government authorising the work had been obteined. It was decided 1 to hold monthly meetings instead of bi-monthly, in order to expedite matters. Scholastic,— The results of the scholarship examinations, held in December, are now published. Of the -candidates who sat at Ayrowtown, two were successful, E. Fisher, Of Lower Shotover, being third for the Iward's scholarship. places in the Southland High School Two district boys, sons of Mr J K. Paton, of Arrowtown, were successful at the recent examinations. Master Kenneth E. Paton. who has been attending the Waitaki High School passed in niatricu ation and solicitor's geneial knowledge, while Herbert S Paton, who attends tie Southland High School, was successful in nir tricu^tion, solicitor's general knowledge, and medical piehnima'ry.
