THE SEDDON MONUMENT.

WELLINGTON, February 3.

The Government intends calling for teniflers immediately for tho monument to be erected over the grave of the late Mr Seddon on Observatory Hill, overlooking the Bolton street' Cemetery, according to the design prepared by Mr Campbell, Government Architect. The monument i-s to oonsiet of a column and pedestal standing on a base of three steps, the bottom step being 23ft square and the top one J4ft square. The pedestal is to have a 'iieight of 16ft from the ground, and the column is to be 33ft in height above the pedestal. The shaft of the column is square, and measures 4ft 6in on each side, tapering to 3ft lOin. It has a moulded and foliated capital, and is surmounted by a> symbolical statue 10ft in height. The total height of the monument is 59ft from the ground. The pedestal is to ha,vo four square buttresses on the angles, with carred trusses on the top, each surmounted by a lion recumbent. The monument will be constructed with a cone of ferro conorete and faced with New Zealand marble or eranite. The pedestal Has panels which will admit of suitable inscription, and over each there are carved festoons, one having in plain letters the word " Seddon." Tenders are returnable within a couple of ■weeks, and it is expected that the work •will be completed within four months. Owing to its large size and its prominent position, the monument will be discernible from the whole of the harbour and many parte of the city. It will be massive and ■well proportioned, thoutrh without elaborate detail.
