ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS. Mataj, Southland. — I should advise you to arrange a change with some other white Leghorn fancier. It probably would do no barm to inbreed for just one season as you suggest, but to effect' a change would be, I think, the better policy. Crossing whites with browns might give you good layers the one season, but your pens would be useless for future breeding. Better stick to the whites.
S. P-, Riverton. — You have set me an impossible task. Chickens die in the way you mention from so many causes that without some idea of the prevailing conditions I can make no suggestion. Have sent your letter to an experienced fancier in your district, who will probably call on you.
