January^o. — -Liie wearaer ouring *n& nou.days has been very seasonable, though we have "been treated.,- to Borne terrible gales of wind, and now we would be pleased to see some rain" to fetch, on the turnip crop. There are some nice crops of grass to cut, and th© reaper will be into the oat 'crop some time this monlh. Shearing is pretty well finished and 1 -the wool away. The farmer has 'very little time to spare between sowing and 1 reaping— in fact, his hands are pretty full all the year jound. The Californian thistle harvest helps to while away a few hours, and then one can always find' a little to do ahouldi he 'have a spar© moment in looking after bunny. Farmers' Union. — When on the Caledonian grounSs on ijiew Year's Day the president, Mr Thos. Taylor, called together a few farmers to. arrange for th© CJinton Farmers' Union picnic, and I ami glad to say that this greet event is to' tafce place on the 1-ast Wednesday of January (29th inst.), at Mr Steel's Wairuna Buih. I/adies are going "to be "asked! as usual to fetdh baskets and cups, aad; tho men are expected to bring pooketfuls oi money to provide prizes for leaping, jumping, running, etc, and we must make this picnics — the first of the Farmers' Union — an immense success. Should any prefer aya v quiet walk, then .the bush is eminently suited for that. I may say that Mr and Mrs Steal are going to have the- tea prepared at their own house, which will be a great convenience. Marriages. — This holiday season is generally reserved for marriages, and amongst the many that have taken place I have much pleasure in wishing Miss Bessie M'lndoe and Mr Samuel Trussler, who were married in Clinton Church on Tuesday, D-eoember 24, a happy -wedded life. Often .may he be seen with his engine on the Downs this coming * season. ,
