CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.

(Faou Ora ,own Cobkespokdmt.) OAMARU, January 9. At tha Magistrate's Court yesterday, b9 fore Mr --R. H>. Turton, S.M., Josepn T. Preen, charged with cruelty to certain cattle by shipping bulls and cows together, was convicted and fined 20s and 22s 8d oosta. The evidence showed that the cattle (11 cows and seven bulls), which, were trucked at' Deborah, near Oamaru, were much exbited when Hampden was reached, and that~"some of the cows were down and much exhausted. The lot were untrucked, and those which were lying down removed at Hampden. But before the truck was picked up by the next train four more cows were down. The day was wet, and the trucks slippery. It was urged in defence that it was usual to mix cows and bulls in trucking them, but the magistrate considered that more precautions should have been taken. ,•- Owing to the frantic barking of a \ittle black spaniel, who wae running' wildly about the metals near Stechford, an engine-driver stopped hia train, and found the body of the etationmaater of Adde*l«tf Park, Birmingham,- Mr R. ] TiMARU HAITB'tUR BOARD. I TIMARU, January 10. The statement for the year ended Decem* ber 31 of the imports and exports of Timaru Harbour shows that "the imports were 86,220 tons, an increase of 7067 tons on the previous record. The import of timber was 8,830,912 ft, and an increase on last year of 2,250,000 ft. The exports during 1907 totalled 65,052 tons, less than last year by 11,960 tons, -wool showing a decrease of 6500 bales, and oats 8,500 tons; The export of frozen . mutton mas 837,997" carcases, a record for the port — an increase of 49,000. The total revenue was £25,036, compared with £25,643 in 1906. The Harbour Board to-day considered & special report by Mr J. P. Maxwell on the wharfage needed now and the future expansion of the harbour. In regard to the latter he proposes to remove the north mole and construct a new one, to provide a larger: area; also to extend by 500 ft the eastern breakwater, recently completed. The Board: accepted with a alight modification the proposal for a jetty and will build a 600f6 jetty m ferro concrete. The other proposals are left to the future. It was' resolved also to advertise 'for a. resident engineer at a salary of £400.
