January 12. Prince yon Bulow, speaking in the Diet, absolutely refused to grant Prussia universal suffrage and the secret ballot. January 13. There is a split in the Navy League, due to Berr Keim's campaign, under Prince Bulow'6 auspices, against the Catholic party at the general election in Berlin. The Brandsburg branches of the league urge Herr Keim to resign. Thirty thousand Socialists held 10 , simultaneous franchise processions. I At Berlin some demonstrations Aver© made against Prince Bulow. The pro- ' cessions were orderly, but at several points the police came into serious collisions with the people, of whom a hundred were injured, some receiving sabre wounds. Twenty-five butchers arrived in Wellington from Sydney by the Moeraki on New Year's Day with the intention of securing employment for the summer at the meat" works in the Wellington and Canterbury . districts. _ i
