CHRISTCHURCH WOOL SALES. CHRISTCHURCH, January 7. For thfe third wool sale of the series, to bo held to-morrow, 17,862 bales have been entered. January 8. The third of the current season's wool sales opened to-day, when catalogues aggregating 17,862 bales were submitted —an increase of 23b0 bales compared with the January sale of last year. The increase was mainly due to large withdrawals at tlie previous sales in coi sequence of the unsatisfactory prices ruling. Compared with the wool offered at the corresponding sale of last year, the clip, taken as a whole, was not so good, the long period of dry weather, with the resulting dust, iaving affected the wool" detrimentally. Many clips showed considerable discoloration, and there was a notable absence of yolk. There was the usual attendance of buyers, Home and colonial firms being fully represented. From the outset the demand showed decided improvement on the previous sales, end for nearly all lots there was keen competition, which was in marked contrast to the i dullness that characterised the opening sales. 9 Halfbred and three-quarterbred wool, whicE > I at last sale elicited little competition and wag difficult to quit even at low prices, were > keenly competed for at prices equal to 2d) 7 to Id above the rates ruling a month ago. ;, Medram halfbreds were in decidedly better - demand, but super, lines were unchanged £ | Merinos sold remarkably well, top price (13d) j being obtained for eight bales of super comb- ' J ing from the Culverden Estate.
