AUSTRALIAN DAIRYING.
j (Pastoralists* Review, November 15.Jf The useful- rains which : were general throughout the maritime regions of the continent in the last week of October and again the first week of November will be more beneficial to cereal crops than to the dairying pastures, and the season is bound to close as one of disappointing! results and diminished production. Over a very extensive area the spring has been' an exceptionally dry one, and, of course, ' our dairying industry, which depends so much Upon natural pasture©, has suffered
severely. There was not only a late ccm79#ncernent of the productive season, but «9 absence of any sufficient increase in the Afbsequent output to provide an adequate compensation. Exportation has recently «««n increasing quickly, but the totals for Jjio season show a decrease of 1785^ tons in ffee London shipments as compared with fee corresponding period of last year. From Adelaide the London shipments have been greater than last year, but a decrease is shown in the case of Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane. As compared with previous seasons, the exports to London are as follows: — 1904-5. 1905-6. 1906-7. 1907-8. From Tons. Tons. Tons. Tons. Melbourne .. 4,068J 3,472 3,793 2,922£ Sydjey ~ .. 2,690 2,211 1,&18 1,059! Brisbane .. «. 666 , 582*, 630fr 467* Adelaide .... 1961 258 330 i 8663 Total .. .. 7,513* 6,473* 6,6015 4,816* At the end of the first three months of the season receipts from Australasia in the London market were reported to be nearly t'j' per cent, behind those of last year, although New Zealand's contribution had Rreatly increased. The danger of thus leaving customers to be supplied by our rivals is kconly felt by those engaged in the tragic, but thov are powerless to avert it. Onlj- the producers of the raw material
of the dairying indmrn can do anything towards evolving a system of dairy-farming in place of the dairy-grazing, which exposes the market to such unnecessary risks.
